Welcome to Bismarck, North Dakota

Home of our Dakota Zoo, and now home to two more African Penguins. These little Penguins have been identified as male. Someone asked me the other day when the Dakota Zoo closes during the winter season. Great question, for some people may think they shut down for a bit.

The Dakota Zoo doesn't have a hard "winter closing"...

The Dakota Zoo doesn't have a hard "winter closing" date but shifts to winter hours (Friday-Sunday, 1-5 PM, weather permitting) starting in October, running until late April, with potential closures for extreme cold or holidays like Thanksgiving/Christmas. They operate seasonally, transitioning from summer (10 AM-6 PM) in late April to October and then winter hours through spring, always dependent on good weather for both animals and visitors.

Now it's time to check out these two adorable dudes

From the Dakota Zoo Facebook Page:

"Our African Penguin colony has grown by TWO! Banks and Verity laid two successful eggs in their first clutch this season. To increase parenting success, Ambrose and Coretta are fostering one of the chicks while Banks and Verity focus on the other. Both families are doing well and the BROTHERS are thriving 💙💙.
Fun Fact: How do we know the sex already? We send in the shell from the hatched eggs and the lab runs a DNA test on the dried membrane!
The parents and chicks are currently behind the scenes in our nesting space until further notice. There will be opportunities to view the chicks later this winter. Check back for updates and stay tuned for an online naming contest over the next few weeks. 🐧 🐧
By supporting the zoo you are supporting critically endangered species such as the African Penguin through our Conservation Fund. The zoo is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 1-5pm weather permitting"
