It was a pretty ambitious plot on paper. You go to sketchy online sites and post advertisements promoting prostitution to sketchy online individuals, I'll refer to these individuals as "The John". The John then responds to the advertisement and arranges a meet up location.  One of the alleged masterminds of the scheme, I'll call her "Harley", meets up with The John and first gets the money before they get frisky.

Here's where the happy date turns into a dud for the John. It seems Harley has a bunch of alleged co-conspirators that jump out of the closet with dangerous weapons and proceed to rob the "commercial sex customer" using threats of violence.  If that didn't work, they allegedly substituted actual physical violence.

So now what's the John to do after getting caught without his pants down? What's he gonna do call the cops?  Well, the police are here to serve and protect- even the pervs.  Plus, I'm sure they enjoyed investigating these cases as much as I liked reading about them.  I don't have the exact number of times this scheme was actually hatched.

This issued Monday November 2nd, from United States Attorney General Drew Wrigley, does mention "customers" along with this timeline-

United States Attorney Drew Wrigley announced that a federal grand jury has indicted Harleigh Josett Haugen, age 20 and Jordan Daniel Kraft, age 21, both of Fargo, ND, for Conspiracy to commit Robbery and Robbery. The Indictment alleges that from May and continuing through June 2019, Haugen and Kraft conspired with a group of young males and females to rob customers of commercial sex.

May through June? They must have gotten away with it for a few Johns before "tricking" the wrong one. How about co-conspirators?  You betcha!  Innocent until otherwise proven of course.

So the "Interference in Commerce" is getting between a prostitute and her John?

I'll be danged.
