Since before I remember, and even before I considered attending college at the University of North Dakota, the Fighting Sioux nickname has been thought of as both an honorable and an offensive nickname. And next week, there will be a documentary film released that looks at all sides of the issue.

Back in March, it was announced that the release of a documentary film titled Fighting Over Sioux would be postponed from its original May 1, 2020 release date until the fall. Well, now, the movie will finally be hitting theaters (and streaming services) on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, November 25. It will even play at The Grand Theater in Bismarck. Take a look at the movie's trailer:

According to a post on the documentary's Facebook page, it took seven years to make this film. And, just from watching the one-minute and 11-second trailer, it appears that this will be powerful messages for anyone who has an opinion - good, bad or otherwise - on the Fighting Sioux name.

Now, for my entire college career at the University of North Dakota, we were still the Fighting Sioux. I have always felt a sense of pride in the school and name. I mean, people all around the country love our hockey team. And I have never known a Fighting Sioux fan to show anything but pride an respect for the school name.

However, I also respect the opinions that this name may be offensive to some. And I am not so attached to a mascot name that I am blinded to the fact that it could be offensive. So, I actually look forward to seeing this movie to understand more why the name is controversial to some.

What are your thoughts on the Fighting Sioux nickname controversy?
