More holiday weekend travelers are expected to be on the roads between Friday, June 30th and Tuesday, July 4th than ever before.

According to AAA, an estimated 44.2 million Americans will be traveling this upcoming holiday weekend, which is up nearly 3 percent from last year. Over the past four years, the number of travelers has steadily increased on July 4th weekend and in that time frame, the overall number has increased nearly 10 percent.

That same increased percentage of overall travelers coincides with the amount of travelers on the road, which is estimated to be 37.5 million.

The national average gas price per gallon is also down from a year ago at $2.24, and lowest for this time of year since 2005. In North Dakota, that average is $2.20. Those prices won't be discouraging to motorists looking to make a drive for the holiday weekend.

Airline travel is also up 4.6 percent from last year to 3.4 million total.

Of the "big three" summer holidays (including Memorial Day and Labor Day), the holiday weekend surrounding Independence Day is known for being the most traveled. The fact that school is out during this time of year typically increases the Independence Day holiday travel between 12 and 13 percent.

No matter what the case, whether you're traveling or staying put during this Fourth of July Weekend, please be safe on the roads and as you celebrate with friends and family. Party responsibly and have an extremely safe and happy 4th of July!
