Heidi Prepares To Bow Out
It was an emotional farewell for outgoing Senator Heidi Heitkamp.
The North Dakota Democrat, who lost her bid for re-election to arch conservative Republican Kevin Cramer, gave her goodbye address on the Senate floor Tuesday.
In an emotional speech, the senator urged her colleagues to reject "partisanship and rancor."
The senator is staying busy in her final days in office. As Rolling Stone reports, she is devoting time to rallying House members to vote in favor of the so-called "Savannah's Act." The act, introduced by Ms. Heitkamp, passed unanimously in the Senate.
The bill, named for the Fargo murder victim, "compels the Justice Department to standardize law enforcement protocols with respect to missing and murdered Native Americans, and to improve the way in which data is collected and shared in these cases."
Senator-elect Cramer will assume office in January. Posted above is her farewell speech in its entirety.
