How Did Two People Contract Legionnaires’ Disease in Minnesota?

A Minnesota hotel is believed to be linked to cases of Legionnaires' disease!

According to KVRR, Ramada by Wyndham in Albert Lea, Minnesota is being investigated by state health officials because a couple of patrons contracted Legionnaires' disease. The infected individuals reportedly have no connection, other than the fact that they stayed at the hotel and used "the pool and hot tub areas around the last weekend of June." While one person was hospitalized and released, the other is still in the hospital.

What are the signs of Legionnaires' disease?

According to the Centers of Disease Control, Legionnaires' disease is caused by Legionella bacteria, which causes "a serious type of pneumonia (lung infection)." Those infected can experience coughing, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches, diarrhea, nausea, and confusion. The CDC also says it can take anywhere from two to 10 days to experience symptoms. One in 10 people who contract Legionnaires' disease do die from complications caused by the illness.

How does one come in contact with Legionnaires' disease?

The CDC reports that Legionaires' disease is easy to contract in manmade building water systems - like showerheads or hot tubs. While Legionella bacteria do exist in nature, the CDC says it becomes a problem in manmade systems when it grows and spreads. And it can exist in droplets small enough for people to breathe in.

My mom has always said that any body of water is just one big toilet. And I really do try not to think about it, but as of today, I think I have lost my desire to go swimming for a while. I guess I will have to invest in a kiddie pool for my apartment!
