Now that Christmas is over, it’s time to face reality—some of those gifts just aren’t going to work out. In fact, over 260,000 North Dakotans are ready to flip their unwanted Christmas presents for a profit. That’s right, our state’s regifting economy is worth a cool $27 million. So much for that “thoughtful” sweater, right?

Apparently, the high cost of living in 2024 has people looking to make some extra cash, and what better way than selling gifts they’ll never use? A whopping 43% of North Dakotans admitted they’ll be re-gifting or reselling presents received this holiday season. Turns out, it's not just about giving, it's about making a quick buck.

When ranked proportionally by population, the data reveals Rhode Islanders as the nation’s top regifters, whereby 83% say they plan to move on unwanted Christmas gifts this year. They were followed by Nevadans (59%) and New Yorkers (56%).

North Dakota’s re-gifting economy may not be the largest, but it’s still a significant part of the $11 billion regifting market across the U.S. Hey, we may be small, but we know how to cash in! And no shame in that—after all, if you’re not going to use that random kitchen gadget, why not sell it to someone who will?

Survey results also revealed that 71% of North Dakotans know immediately after unwrapping a gift that it’s going straight to the regift pile. And, let’s be real, 38% of us feel a little guilty about the whole thing, but it’s hard to turn down a chance to help make ends meet (or get rid of Aunt Karen’s quirky decorations).

So if you’re one of the 43% of North Dakotans planning to re-sell or re-gift your unwanted presents, don’t worry—you’re in good company. Just try not to get caught, because no one wants to explain to Grandma why that scarf she gave you is now being sold on Facebook Marketplace.
