You could say that I'm biased, but there's something special about North Dakota's sunrises and sunsets. Whether it's the fiery hues of the early morning or the peaceful calm of dusk, our skies are always putting on a show. The open, wide landscapes seem to make the colors pop even more.

According to meteorologists, sunrises and sunsets really are better in winter, thanks to different types of scattering, reflection, and refraction of light. The shorter days mean families can wake up later and still enjoy beautiful winter sunrises together, capturing lasting memories.

Mixbook's recent survey of over 3,100 people revealed some of the best spots across the U.S. to catch a winter sunrise, or witness beautiful morning colors, and North Dakota made quite the impression with three locations.

First up, Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area takes the crown as North Dakota’s top winter sunrise spot at #49This lesser-visited spot within the park offers a stunning sunrise view over the rugged badlands. In winter, the snow-covered buttes glow under the first light, creating an incredible contrast between the white landscape and the fiery hues of dawn.

Next, Theodore Roosevelt National Park (Painted Canyon Overlook) made it to #54This remote wilderness area provides a pristine morning setting, with snow-covered frozen waters and towering peaks. The solitude of the Adirondacks in winter makes for an unforgettable and peaceful sunrise experience.

And rounding out the list, Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge at #88A peaceful hidden gem in the Souris River Basin where the sunrise reflects off frozen lakes and rolling hills. In winter, frost-covered reeds and flocks of birds create a tranquil, otherworldly atmosphere as the sun rises over the prairie.

Montana also made the list with Seeley Lake Overlook at #51. This lesser-known spot in western Montana offers breathtaking sunrise views over a frozen lake surrounded by towering pines. The crisp air and solitude make for a perfect winter morning.

Do you have a favorite spot to catch those beautiful views?
