Mandan city commissioners passed a new ordinance for rideable devices (e-bikes, electric scooters, etc.) this past Tuesday, September 1st. According to KFYR, there has been an uptick in riders in the area, so many residents felt a new set of rules and restrictions was needed.

What Are the New E-Bike Rules And Restrictions?

Under this new ordinance, sidewalks and city trails will have a 15-mph speed limit, and riders must slow down at pedestrian crossings. There are now age restrictions too. A person must be at least 12-years-old to ride most e-bikes and e-scooters within the city. For Class 3 e-bikes (bikes with a max speed of 28 mph), you must be at least 16, and all riders under 18 must wear helmets.

Additional Rules Riders Should Know About

The city's website lists the new rules riders and parents should know before hopping on an electric device. Here's some additional information.

  • Pedestrians always have the right of way.
  • Riders cannot carry more people than the device is designed to carry.
  • Devices traveling at more than 30 mph are not allowed on sidewalks or trails.
  • There are light and brake requirements for devices 30 minutes before sunset and 30 minutes after sunrise.
  • Riding an e-bike or electric scooter while under the influence is strictly prohibited.
  • A parent or legal guardian is responsible for any violation cited for a minor.

The city may also create no-ride zones, lower-speed areas, trail restrictions, and temporary event restrictions for e-bikes and scooters. Get more info on the City of Mandan website.
