Mandan Police Department Warning About A Scary New Scam
The Mandan Police Department is warning its residents of a new scary scam.
According to a press release, this is a phone scam, and the caller is claiming to be Sargent Jerod Allen or Lieutenant Collins of the Morton County Sheriff's office.
The caller will then claim there is paperwork filed by the courts that needs to be taken care of, or a warrant will be issued through the local magistrate, or deputies will be called in to arrest you.
The scammer will then ask you for a large amount of cash to be deposited into a kiosk. The caller is reported to have a heavy southern accent (this should be a dead giveaway that he is not local).
Be advised that the number he is calling from looks to be that of the Morton County Sheriff's office. This has been throwing people off.
Why you shouldn't fall for this type of phone scam.
Citizens should always be cautious of such calls, as government institutions will not ask for such information over the phone.
Elderly people especially tend to fall victim to these types of phone scams. I have an older uncle who forked over thousands of dollars in a similar type of scam recently, and I can tell you from personal experience, it can be heartbreaking for those individuals affected.
What should you do if you receive this phone scam call?
According to the Mandan Police Department, please contact your local law enforcement agency.
