Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye Will Get His Own Disney+ Series
Disney is hoping high-profile series and films featuring some of its biggest properties will be enough to compete with Netflix when their streaming service, Disney+, launches later this year. That includes several new Marvel projects, including a previously announced Loki show, and possibly series for Avengers like Vision, the Scarlet Witch, Falcon, and the Winter Soldier. To that list, according to Variety, we can now add another name: Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye:
Disney’s upcoming streaming service is officially developing a limited series based on the archery ace Marvel character with Renner attached to star. The project is said to be an adventure series in which Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, will pass the torch to Kate Bishop. Bishop is a Marvel Comics character who took up the Hawkeye mantle after Barton. She is also a member of the group known as the Young Avengers.
The premise sounds a lot like the outstanding Hawkeye comic book of a few years ago by writer Matt Fraction and artist David Aja, in which Clint Barton takes Kate Bishop under his wing and also helps fix extremely small-scale problems around his neighborhood in New York City. It was a hysterically funny comic, and really sharply designed by Aja — something that might be tough to translate to a television series. Still, with the right casting and the right creative team, this kind of Hawkeye story could be the right fit for a Marvel TV project.
There’s no official date for Disney+’s launch yet, but it’s expected some time in the fall of 2019.
