NDSU Student Brutally Attacked Over Labor Day Weekend
A nursing student at North Dakota State University underwent major surgery after being brutally attacked over Labor Day weekend.
According to the InForum, Isaiah Smith, a 21-year-old from Brainerd was outnumbered and beat up on Friday, September 1st. Smith was in football, basketball and track at Brainerd High School and graduated in 2014.
Smith's sister described the incident on a YouCaring page as a way to raise funds for the multiple surgery. At the time this article was written, the site had raised $30,679 of a $40,000 goal.
The InForum reports that the 21-year-old was out in Fargo on Friday night when the attack happened. There is a police investigation going on so Smith's sister released what information she could on the YouCaring page:
His jaw was hanging from his face, broken in 3 places. Fragments from his jaw bone were near his facial nerves, the surgeon had to pull each fragment out very carefully in order for the facial nerves to stay in tact. His chin, broken, lacerated underneath. Teeth, what teeth? Isaiah will have lost more than half his teeth after this journey to recovery. The surgeon said this is the worst injury he's ever seen.
Other possible injuries include broken arm and a concussion. Smith will need a majority of his teeth replaced as his jaw is currently wired shut. He has gone through 7+ hours of surgery so far.
