I've always said, "The Smartest Driver is the person who drives defensively."

Sadly, though, there is no defense against someone drunk behind the wheel, and that is why there are many who purposely stay at home. On this first day back to work after a Memorial Day weekend here in Bismarck and Mandan, it always makes you cringe to hear tragic news of accidents on our roads in North Dakota; it's pretty much unavoidable.

Some of the most glaring doses of reality are some of the LAME excuses given when pulled over

Ok, now is the time to be honest. If you found yourself pulled over for driving just a bit too fast, do you try to talk your way out of a ticket? Well, most police officers have heard it all. Check out a few examples that the North Dakota Highway Patrol posted on their Facebook page:

"Highlights on I-94 during this holiday weekend:

Excuse #1: I needed to use the bathroom. (The censored version of this excuse) 109 mph in 80 mph
Excuse #2: “I was washing the bugs off my windshield.” 102 mph (100 locked on radar) in 80mph
Memorial Day through Labor Day is known as the “100 Deadliest Days” due to the increase in fatal crashes across the country and right here in ND. Speeding and aggressive driving continue to be leading factors in deadly crashes.
Slow down. Buckle up. Leave early. Getting there a few minutes faster is never worth a life"
One last personal note:
Thank you to all police officers who risk their lives every time they put on a uniform and keep us safe.
