The Morton County Sheriff's Office is asking the community for help in finding the person(s) responsible for blowing up mailboxes over the holiday weekend.

While fireworks are a fun way to celebrate our nation's independence, unfortunately, some, use them in unconventional and disrespectful ways.

Legal Ramifications

You might not know it, but mail is protected by the Federal Government. Crimes against the mail service (USPS) are considered Federal offenses. According to USPS.com, vandals can be fined up to $250,000 or imprisoned for up to 3 years for each act of vandalism where mail was destroyed.

You Might Not Realize

What those responsible might not realize is that this isn't just a fun prank. The victims of these crimes have to buy new mailboxes, posts, and may never know what mail has been lost. It's quite the inconvenience.

It's also particularly mean because you never know what people are expecting in the mail. Someone could be looking forward to receiving irreplaceable family photos, birthday cards, school diplomas, transcripts, or other important documents that are hard to replace.
