Let the games begin! Ah yes, the world has been dying to say that once again, and here we go - The Olympics have begun in Tokyo - just a mere 14 hours ahead of North Dakota time! Things have definitely changed since the old days of spectators at the events - This year there won't be very many.

Organizers announced in June the disappointing news

The COVID-19 virus is still wreaking havoc causing Olympic organizers to bar MOST spectators at the events - however, if you live in Japan you are considered a Domestic spectator, and you will be allowed to be on-site, but there will be some restrictions.

Former NDSU Bison will be competing

Payton Otterdahl becomes the 8th North Dakota State Bison Alum to represent the USA in the Olympics. An incredible personal best throw in the shot put at the Olympic Trial earned Payton the honor to be in the games - his third-place toss of 71 feet 11 inches landed him a trip to Tokyo.

Give Payton an inch, and he'll take 5,744 miles.

Only one inch separated Payton from an airline ticket to his couch at home. The Olympics! I still have great respect for all the athletes that work so hard just to get there and represent your country - such an honor. Payton began his NDSU career back in the 2014-2015 season.

How pumped up is Payton Otterdahl?

Payton had this to say to KVRR

It’ll be a little different than what I’m use to with the entire place being empty but nonetheless it’s still an Olympic meet and I’m still standing amongst the best shot putters in the world so it’s got to be go-time

Good Luck Payton! Go Team USA!
