Spring Flooding Threatens Plains States

Winter seems to be winding down (finally). but now much of the region is bracing for flooding.

As the Fargo Forum reports, parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, nebraska and Iowa could see some serious flooding this week.

The governors of South Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska have declared states of emergency, with other states set to follow suit. President Donald Trump spoke last week with the governor of Nebraska about the situation.

Authorities are calling much of the Midwestern flooding "historic."

In Iowa, the Missouri River breached and broke levees. Two fatalities - both Nebraska men - were reported as of Sunday evening.

As for Minnesota, the Star Tribune reports some serious flooding, but not yet "historic."

"The storms this week have been extremely difficult for many of our communities," said South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem. "This has been a statewide emergency with people impacted by heavy snow, high winds, rain, and freezing rain."

Flooding is not an issue for much of North Dakota - yet. But make no mistake: farmers, weather forecasters and emergency personnel will be watching the waterways very closely.
