As heartbreaking as it was for the University of North Dakota to announce the women's hockey team was cut, they have some more explaining to do in the case of recruit Lauren Hennessey.

Lauren Hennessey, a native of Lynnfield, MA, and her parents flew into Grand Forks from Boston on Wednesday morning for her official visit at UND. She had previously given a verbal commitment to the North Dakota women's hockey team, with hopes of becoming the future goaltender for the Fighting Hawks.

After receiving a campus tour upon her arrival, Hennessey then watched UND's women's team practice, before being asked to meet with the coaches. Head coach Brian Idalski broke the news to Hennessey that the women's hockey team had been cut. She and her family were in complete and utter shock.

The official announcement came in a press release Wednesday afternoon that women's hockey, along with men's and women's swimming and diving programs would be cut due to budgetary restraints.

Hennessey said she had turned down several Division I offers for UND. As most Division I programs have completed their recruiting processes, Hennessey claims her chance at playing hockey at that level are 'slim-to-none.'

Wednesday afternoon, the situation became a mess on social media in the aftermath of the announcement of the program cuts.

Former UND All-American and USA Olympian's Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux also voiced their concern on Twitter.

Hennessey says she hopes the program can be saved and feels sorry for current UND players and coaches as their situations have dramatically changed as well.

Another women's hockey recruit that previously committed to UND, Kara Werth, from Moorhead, MN, is also dealing with the news of the cuts. Werth had previously turned down offers at Dartmouth and Brown for North Dakota.

The future of several coaches and players for each program cut at UND remains up in the air after the announcement came out Wednesday.
