Essentia Health and HealthPartners Plan Major Merger Affecting North Dakota

The upper Midwest healthcare landscape is about to undergo a massive transformation. Minnesota-based healthcare providers Essentia Health and HealthPartners announced yesterday in a press release that they plan to merge. The two organizations plan to form one large healthcare system under the HealthPartners name.

This will combine 22 hospitals, 135 clinics, and more than 6,000 clinicians, thus creating one of the largest nonprofit healthcare systems in the Midwest.

"As a combined nonprofit health system, we will be able to better innovate and grow our workforce," said Essentia Health CEO David Herman, MD.

The providers say combining their resources will help them accomplish the following goals:

• Expand access to high-quality care across urban and rural communities
• Make care coverage easier and more affordable
• Accelerate innovation, research and workforce development

What This Means For North Dakota Communities

This deal will ripple through North Dakota; Essentia Health operates several clinics and facilities across the state. As part of the transition, North Dakota Essentia clinics will adopt the HealthPartners name.
