He was the subject of a statewide missing person alert issued by the Minnesota BCA earlier this month. Investigators had earlier located his vehicle in the northeastern part of eastern Minnesota’s Pine County.

He’s identified as 86-year-old Gerald Knapp. Officials said he was last spotted traveling south on Jan. 28 out of the small town of Askov, MN, which is about 55 miles southwest of Duluth.

The BCA says members of the Pine County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team located his remains while following up on images captured during a drone search.

Search and rescue members found his remains in the Nemadji State Forest, which is about 30 miles northeast of Askov on Tuesday. Officials said Knapp had suffered from dementia.
