When you hear about Military-related sex crimes, you might think about sexual assault within the military. But a North Dakota Military man has been accused of another type of sex crime. This week, a Staff Sergeant with the 5th Bomb Wing on the Minot Air Force Base was arrested for sex crimes against children.

KFYR-TV is reporting that 29-year-old Abraham Carrillo was arrested by Berthold Police for sex crimes including luring minors and distributing obscene images. Carrillo was caught when the "boy" he was allegedly talking to, turned out to be an undercover agent. Officials at the Minot Air Force Base are cooperating with police. I looked into sex crimes in the Military, and most of the information I found pertains only to sex crimes against adults. In a PBS article from 2020, sex crime reports in the Air Force, alone, increased by nine percent in 2019. And Military sex crimes, in general, are a continued problem. But sex crimes against children are actually more common, and less talked about.

Military prisons house more child sex criminals than any other type of offender.

I had to specifically search "pedophilia in the Military" to find anything specific to sex crimes against kids. I only found a handful of stories about this type of crime, but the most interesting and informative ones were from 2015 and 2016 investigative reports by AP News. Here is the most shocking information obtained from the investigations:

  • 2015 - Military prisons house more child sex criminals than any other type of offender.
  • 2016 - Child sex-assault cases are not a focus for the Defense Department's annual report to Congress on sexual assaults.
  • 2016 - There were at least 1,584 "substantiated cases of Military dependents being sexually abused" between 2010 and 2014. Eight-hundred-and-forty of those cases involved children.

The story about Staff Sergeant Carrillo's alleged sex crimes is the first I have heard about Military personnel pursuing children on an app. But I have a feeling it will not be the last time we hear about this type of crime happening in the Military.
