ND Republican Seeks To Reform ND Voter Rules.

One year soon, I suspect our North Dakota way of holding elections will come to a close. It's inevitable, but still a shame. North Dakota is the one state in the country where there is no voter registration. The ONLY state. I've always enjoyed the sense of trust that's just built in the lack of registration regulation. It's sort of like leaving your car unlocked but empty of valuables, there's nothing to steal! Currently here are the qualifications you need to vote in North Dakota.

In order to vote in North Dakota, you must be:

A U.S. citizen.
At least 18 years old on the day of an election.
A North Dakota resident.
A resident in the precinct for 30 days preceding the election.

Is it because of rampant election accusations nationwide that legislators would feel the need to mess with our voting rules? Especially a republican representative who's a member of the super-majority party that just ran off with the last election in landslide numbers statewide! I presume if anyone could ever be accused of stuffing ballot boxes is would be the ND GOP. Seriously, a Democrat would have to win something before we could call foul.

But in a move that I think infringes upon the rights of many in our state, many moving to our state, or the many moving around our state. It's House Bill 1289 and it seeks

SECTION 1. AMENDMENT. Subsection 7 of section 4.1-20-02 of the North Dakota Century Code is amended and reenacted as follows: 7. "Qualified elector" means an individual who is at least eighteen years old, is a citizen of the United States, has resided in this state for at least one year, and has resided in the precinct ~~thirty~~ ninety days next preceding the election

The bill changes the length a perspective voter must live in the state to be eligible. If the bill passes you would have to live in the state for one year before being eligible to vote. If moving within the state, you would have to live in a precinct for 90 days versus the current 30 days.

Is it a big deal? Sure, if I moved to a state I would not want to wait an entire year to be able to vote. North Dakota's voting requirements seem to be working pretty darn good. Unless of course you think republicans have been stealing elections...based on their success they must be pretty good at it.
