The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added North Dakota to the growing list of states where cut melon may be contaminated with salmonella.

The FDA announced this past Thursday (July 19th) that there are now 23 states where cut melon may contain salmonella. Cut watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, and fruit salads have been recalled from stores in these states, such as Walmart, Kroger, Walgreens, Sprouts Farmers Market, Costco and Whole Foods/Amazon.

It's suggested that anyone who has purchased cut melon from any of the listed retailers should throw it away. Retailers are also being advised by the FDA to not serve or sell precut melon products delivered by Gordon Food Service, SpartanNash Distribution, or Caito Foods Distribution.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that between April 30th and May 28th of this year, there were at least 60 people that became ill due to the salmonella outbreak from the contaminated cut melon.

Symptoms of salmonella food poisoning include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. These may occur in the first 12 to 72 hours of being exposed to the bacteria. Outbreaks have been on the rise throughout the U.S. this summer. Other foods that have been recalled due to salmonella are raw turkey, Honey Smacks cereal, Ritz crackers, and Swiss rolls.

Be mindful of where you purchase your fruit, North Dakota!
