During a surfing competition in South Africa this weekend, Australian surfer Mick Fanning was attacked by a shark. Thankfully, he was unharmed.

The attack took place during the J-Bay Open on Jeffreys Bay in South Africa, according to USA Today.

So, how did Fanning escape serious injury and possibly even death? Here's what he had to say after the attack, courtesy of USA Today:

I was just sitting there, I was just about to start moving, and then I felt something grab, just get stuck in my leg rope. I instantly just jumped away, and then it just kept coming at my board. I was kicking and screaming…. I just saw fins. I was waiting for the teeth to come at me. I punched it in the back.

Fanning won the 2007, 2009 and 2013 ASP World Tour, according to his Wikipedia page.
