Refunds Offered To North Dakota Deer Hunters

Update on the hunting scene here in Bismarck/Mandan. The outbreak of the disease in whitetails is prevalent from Bismarck to Garrison. According to the Bismarck Tribune, "Epizootic hemorrhagic disease -- commonly called EHD -- is a viral disease transmitted by biting midges"

White-tailed deer are the ones that are primarily affected

Hunters are not in any danger of this disease, however, they are affected by the way that they should not consume or shoot a deer if it appears infected. gf.nd.gov reports that "EHD causes dehydration and a high body temperature, causing deer to seek water prior to death.".

North Dakota wildlife officials are offering refunds

For those that have special deer hunting bow licenses, North Dakota wildlife officials are offering refunds - the outbreak is still under investigation. Gun season begins in November

Just how many cases have been reported so far?

This isn't the first time that this disease has been reported, hunters in southwestern North Dakota will remember that. So far there have been quite a few cases of sick or dead deer - Game and Fish Wildlife Veterinarian Charlie Bahnson said "...there have been about 370. "that's a lot,"

They are able to keep tracking where the outbreak is occurring

With the help of the public, The North Dakota Game and Fish Department are able to trace the outbreak - Casey Anderson, wildlife chief for Game and Fish in Bismarck  “Tracking an outbreak like this would not be possible without the public's involvement.” So in other words, do your part when you are out and about, report any signs of sick or dead deer.
