Rookie Alexander Rossi Wins 100th Indy 500
American driver Alexander Rossi conserved his fuel late and hung on to win the 100th running of the 100th Indianapolis 500 in Indiana on Sunday afternoon.
Josef Newgarden and Carlos Munoz lead the field late, but both drivers had to pit for fuel, allowing Rossi to seize the lead for good.
An IndyCar rookie from California, Rossi captured the checkered flag to become the ninth rookie to win the 500 — the first since Helio Castroneves in 2001. He customarily drank the milk favored by winners of the iconic race afterward.
Munoz finished second to give Andretti Racing a 1-2 finish. Newgarden finished third with Tony Kanaan and Charlie Kimball rounding out the top 5.
