ND: Should COs Be Allowed To Fire You Over Social Media Posts
We have seen several situations like this come up around the country, and for the most part, from the big-name companies to small family-run businesses, employees have been fired for their own personal social media posts, on their very own semi-private accounts - like Facebook, Instagram, and whatever else their thoughts are expressed on. Doesn't matter the size of the city, either, from Bismarck to New York.

Many people are adamant that what they feel, say, and act outside the boundaries of their workplace should be up to them
Let me elaborate just a bit on what I have observed several times recently - one arena that many people feel strongly about is politics. There was a horrendous act that took place, and unfortunately, personal opinions quickly made their way to their social media. So many people feel that one's opinion, values, and thoughts should be freely expressed; they do just that, and then find themselves fired by their employers. Is this fair?
Now, try to put yourself in the place of a business owner, and YOU are representing them as an employee
People may and will judge you on what others say or how they act; that's human nature. Simply put, the basic question is "Can my boss fire me if I share my political beliefs on social media platforms?" According to smitheylaw.com "Yes, Your boss can legally fire you for sharing political beliefs on social media unless your post qualifies for protection under federal labor laws or specific state laws"
Once again, is it fair or not? Think twice before you voice your opinions.
