"The Year Of The Dog" - A Movie About Hope And Recovery

"Hi Everyone,

I am not technically from Bismarck, but I made an independent film called, “The Year of the Dog” that will be opening locally at Grand 22 Theatres February 24th. So, I kind of feel like an honorary member of town and just wanted to say hi and thank you for letting us show our film.

It stars a real-life rescue dog named Caleb and we’re donating 5% of profits to Central Dakota Humane Society in Caleb’s honor.

This was the inviting message that my friend Robert delivered to Bismarck and Mandan a couple of months ago. His debut - a full-length movie that he co-directed and co-starred in. I had a commitment and missed the showing, but I couldn't wait for this to come out digitally - which it did last Friday ( April 7th ). I'll give you a list of how to watch this in a second.

This is his first movie - 137 minutes of hope, survival, an UNDERDOG ( no pun attended )...

...a story that appeals to so many people, in a thousand different ways. Rob stars in 'The Year Of The Dog' - This 41-year-old spent his childhood dealing with some pretty traumatic stuff in some rural villages in Alaska - I was amazed at how accurate he was in acting the part of an alcoholic who was facing a major turning point in his life - to ATTEMPT to stay sober for 30 days. This is a feat that slays most people in early recovery.

This film was shot in Montana in only 19 days, which is flat-out remarkable

I guarantee you 100 million % you will fall in love with his co-star - Caleb. According to theyearofthedog.com Caleb is a rescue dog who had bounced between foster homes for years because he was reported “too much dog”—is there such a thing? He eventually landed in the loving care of Cathy and Gregg Pittman of the Performing Animal Troupe. The Year of the Dog marks Caleb's feature-film debut. Rob plays the role of Matt, a loner alcoholic that is dealing with the demons of addiction - you can just feel the angst, the raw tension of what the fight is all about - trying to save your own life. Here is the thing, you don't have to have any personal issues with recovery/.addiction to relate to this movie. It's as genuine and REAL as you will ever find. Robert's goal is simple, "...saving lives, capturing the emotional essence of the experience" - by the way, Rob is NOT an alcoholic, but you wouldn't know it by watching his acting ability - This movie is his true love, his baby, and every second of the film captures his real concern and a common goal - "We all have a responsibility to support each other"

The one thing that I was most impressed with was something Rob told me...

After a screening of the movie, an addiction counselor came up to him and told him that "... 'The Year Of The Dog' will save lives in the future". I can't think of a greater compliment than that. THE actor Jeff Bridges paid him an ultimate professional 5-star review - telling Robert that he "...saw a beautiful film, and was impressed with how he dealt with addiction" -
