This story will never leave my head - doesn't matter how many years go by when I hear the two words...

..."Heaven's Gate" unimaginable horror comes to mind. So what is a cult in your opinion? I would simply say that anyone who is led to believe someone else's lifestyle and beliefs, and completely loses themselves in reality is a prime target. This is what happened in Rancho San Diego, California back on March 26th, 1997. An anonymous call to the police department ended up in the discovery of 39 dead men and women - all in the same house.

Try and imagine the horror of walking into a huge mansion with decaying bodies - the overwhelming smell of death

"Heaven's Gate was an American new religious movement (often described as a cult) whose members committed mass suicide in 1997" according to wikipedia.org. two people were thought to be behind this whole suicide mission -  Bonnie Nettles (1927–1985) and Marshall Applewhite (1931–1997), known within the movement as Ti and Do. If they all "left their vehicle" together ( another name for their body ) - the whole group would be able to rise and join the Comet Hale-Bopp - " Just before the mass suicide, the group's website was updated with the message: "Hale–Bopp brings closure to Heaven's Gate ...our 22 years of classroom here on planet Earth is finally coming to conclusion—'graduation' from the Human Evolutionary Level. We are happily prepared to leave 'this world' and go with Ti's crew."

One of the dead was a Minnesota woman

This is part of the horror, many of these men and women left their families and loved ones, to join this doomed group. One of them was 54-year-old Suzanne Sylvia Cooke from Minnesota. All of the bodies were wearing Nike shoes, and identical dark clothes, their heads covered, and lying under purple shrouds. A mixture of barbiturates and alcohol led each one to their death. I lived in San Diego at the time. This story quickly spread throughout the world. For more on this, check out this video:
