
North Dakota Campers Ready? Blacktail Dam Reservations Begin May 18
Camping season is officially making a comeback in western North Dakota, and for many outdoor lovers, that means one thing — it’s time to start planning trips to one of the region’s favorite recreation spots. If you’ve been waiting for camping reservations to open at Blacktail Dam, the wait is almost over.
Online reservations for the 2026 camping season at Blacktail Dam will officially open at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 18. Campers will be able to reserve sites for stays running from May 21 through November 1, 2026. With warmer weather finally arriving across western North Dakota, many families are already eager to get their campers, fishing gear, and lawn chairs ready for another season outdoors.

Blacktail Dam Upgrades Promise Bigger and Better Camping Experience in 2026
Beginning May 21, most of the park will reopen for both day-use activities and overnight camping. Visitors are being reminded to pay close attention to posted signs throughout the park, as some sections will remain closed temporarily due to ongoing construction projects and improvements.
The upcoming camping season will feature several upgraded amenities designed to improve the visitor experience. Campers will have access to 28 campsites equipped with water and electric hookups, along with four group campsites offering full hookups for larger gatherings. For those looking for a more rugged outdoor experience, five primitive campsites will also be available.
Blacktail Dam visitors will also notice several new additions around the park this year. New playgrounds, updated comfort stations with restrooms and showers, walking trails, a sand volleyball court, and a new outdoor lawn chair amphitheater are all part of the recent improvements aimed at making the recreation area even more family-friendly.

More Improvements Coming as Blacktail Dam Expansion Projects Continue Through Summer
Construction work will continue throughout the summer in the beach campground area and the lower primitive camping section. In addition, the Williams County Park Board has approved plans for a brand-new community building, with groundbreaking expected to begin in the coming weeks.
For many in western North Dakota, Blacktail Dam has become a favorite summer destination for camping, boating, fishing, and relaxing outdoors. With expanded amenities and continued improvements, the 2026 camping season is shaping up to be one of the best yet.
