Shots Fired At Rural/Small Town North Dakota Men

Not literally, but a woman called into my radio show yesterday to complain that all North Dakota rural and small-town men look the same. In particular, she was complaining about how men look in my adopted hometown of Lincoln.

This woman, who didn't want to be identified, but asked me to call her by the name of "Lonesome Dove" (How original). She had moved to Lincoln from Minneapolis, Minnesota, about a year ago, and she was having a hard time meeting any man she would ever consider dating. She claims that all rural or small-town North Dakota men look the EXACT same. I asked her what she meant by that, and she told me to open up my Facebook. This is where she sent me.

She said small-town/rural North Dakota men are all short, have a beard or some sort of facial hair, a baseball cap on, a big dad bod beer belly, they all chew, and most can't even hold a conversation. YIKES! Tell me how you really feel, girl.

I didn't really know how to respond to her claim, but as somebody who spends a fair amount of time in Lincoln, I do have to admit that some of her claims are true (not that there is anything wrong with looking like the picture above). If you walk into, say, the Cenex in Lincoln, you are likely to run into your share of short men, probably with a can of Skol in their back pocket, baseball cap, facial hair, and they could probably stand to lose a few pounds. Yep, so what? Who doesn't need to lose a little weight?

Somewhat Exagerated

I will say that her claims are a little exaggerated. After all, did you know that North Dakota men are actually some of the tallest in the country with nearly a 6-foot average? And not every Lincoln, North Dakota man has facial hair, but many women I know like their man a little scruffy. Am I wrong, ladies?

I think this is a classic case of somebody moving from the big city with very different expectations. Lincoln men (and rural ND guys) keep rockin' that baseball cap. I know I will. If you agree or disagree with Lonseome Dove's comments, please let me know in the comments on our Facebook page.
