Changes for North Dakota's Only National Park

North Dakota's Theodore Roosevelt National Park is truly one of the state's biggest treasures. Breathtaking views, stunning wildlife, and an experience like no other. If you are heading to the North Dakota badlands this spring or summer, you should be aware of some updates starting May 1st, 2026, according to a press release.

#1 The Park is Going Cashless

This is to improve your experience and put more resources back into the park and updated camping reservations. Going cashless will also allow visitors to enter the park faster with reduced transaction times. This will also make the park more efficient. Currently, cash makes up less than 10% of the transactions, but it takes park rangers up to 8 1/2 hours a day to process. Moving away from cash will also allow the park to focus on visitor services and vital projects like trail rehab and road safety.

#2 New Campground Reservations

This is also starting May 1st, 2026. All campsites at Cottonwood Campground, Juniper Campground, and Roundup Group Horse Camp will require a reservation. Again, no cash or checks will be allowed at these sites.

If you would like to book a campsite, keep in mind you can do so 6 months in advance. Same-day reservations are also available. You can call 1-877-444-6777 to make a reservation or you can book one here.
