One of the coolest guys you will ever meet

This young man is Garrett Roth, and his 6-year-old son Jaxon. I had the privilege of meeting and talking with him way back in September. Garrett is the coach of the Bismarck Bobcats - his first year going in, and I remember like it was yesterday his humble approach of dealing with young men. Their goals and ambitions, and what it's like living away from home. Garrett was getting prepared for one of the most amazing times of his life.

Garrett is no stranger to the Bobcats

As a player back in 2003, he led the Bobcats to their second of Back-to-Back Borne Cup Championships in 2003. Roth has his number 27 retired, and a banner hangs in the VFW SportsCenter honoring his accomplishments. To this day, he still holds the franchise record for All-Time Points, Goals and Assists. Within a couple of minutes that day with talking to him, I knew there was something special.

Not sure how many people would have predicted a 49-14 overall record

The last time the Bismarck Bobcats WON the Robertson Cup Championship was back in 2010. As the Cats continued winning this season ( they would set a franchise record of 49-14 ), the postseason and a trip to Blaine, Minnesota, were within their reach. The only problem was getting past Aberdeen, as the Wings stunned the Cats by winning the first two games of the best 3 out of 5 series. This is when GOOD teams fall. The Bismarck Bobcats weren't GOOD, they were EXCELLENT.

Two wins on the road, and one electric game at home

The Cats WON game 5 on a Monday night at home. Their next two series in the playoffs found them in a hole. Under Garrett's leadership, he sent them out on the ice relaxed, focused, and ready to play THEIR game. On a Tuesday night, May 20th, OUR Bismarck Bobcats wrapped up the championship by knocking off Lone Star 4-2 in a single-game-winner-take-all -

Time to rest now, coach?

Not at all, with just 6 returning players - "We have a lot of work to do, rounding out our roster..." - Garrett Roth loves his job and what he does for his team. He and his staff build character with the guys, and they learn to play as a team. Congratulations again Garrett - you are truly a role model. To all you Bismarck Bobcats fans, we will see you on opening night when the Championship banner is raised!
