The state of California has added five more states to its ban list for state-funded travel.

Other than both being part of the contiguous United States, California and North Dakota basically have nothing in common. Especially when it comes to belief systems. When it comes to LGBTQ+ rights, California is very liberal and North Dakota is very conservative. And California is supporting the LGBTQ+ community by discontinuing state-funded travel to states that have anti-LGBTQ+ policies.

Why did the Attorney General of California just ban most state-funded travels to North Dakota and four other states?

US News reports that California's Attorney General, Rob Bonta added Florida, Arkansas, Montana, West Virginia, and North Dakota to a list of 17 other states that state-funded travel is banned (except under limited circumstances). This is because of recent state laws that are decidedly anti-LGBTQ+ - like North Dakota's controversial law that basically bans transgender athletes. Attorney General Bonta stated, "Make no mistake: We’re in the midst of an unprecedented wave of bigotry and discrimination in this country — and the State of California is not going to support it."

US News reports that the Attorney General was unsure of the impact this ban will have. So, I have to say that I can respect a state leader looking out for their people in such a way. It definitely would not be financially beneficial to stop travel. But, supporting rights should be a higher priority than financial gain.
