The only North Dakota student in the Scripps National Spelling Bee has been eliminated from the competition.

Chloe Carlson, a 7th grader from Minot was in Washington D.C. competing for a chance to be crowned the nation's spelling champion.

Unfortunately, Carlson was eliminated from the 'Bee' in the third round. Following a day of preliminary tests on Tuesday which consisted of multiple choice questions and vocabulary questions, Carlson hit the stage along with 284 peers for the oral portion of the competition.

In round 2 which began on Wednesday morning, Carlson correctly spelled the word 'zori' (pronounced ZOR-EE), which is a kind of Japanese sandal or flip-flop.

In round 3, Carlson incorrectly spelled the word 'consulate.' She spelled it C-O-N-S-O-L-A-T-E. Unfortunately for Chloe, misspelling that word forced her out of the competition. Even if she had spelled the word right, there still was no guarantee she would advance to the finals. It would have depended on how well she did during the multiple choice and vocabulary tests.
